Kars, located in the eastern part of Türkiye, is facing heavy snowfall this winter. In some high-altitude areas, snow depth has reached up to 60 cm. The intense snowfall has closed village roads and disrupted air travel, while the city is covered in a thick white blanket, creating stunning winter landscapes.

Snowfall in Kars affects transportation

Over the past 48 hours, heavy snow and dense fog have made travel extremely difficult. A total of 20 village roads remain closed: 1 in the city center, one in Digor, five in Kagizman, and 13 in Sarikamis. Municipal teams continue working with snowplows and salt to reopen blocked routes. Authorities warn that roads may close again if snowfall continues.

Air traffic has also been affected. Several flights were delayed, canceled, or rerouted due to low visibility and icy runways. Travelers are advised to follow current flight updates and avoid unnecessary trips. Rural and mountainous residents are urged to stay home unless absolutely necessary.

Community response, local efforts

Local communities in Kars have stepped in to support residents and travelers affected by the snowfall. Volunteers help elderly residents clear paths, deliver essential supplies, and check heating systems in remote households.

Small businesses, including cafes and bakeries, provide warm shelters for those caught outside. Local authorities coordinate with emergency teams to monitor high-risk areas and assist those in need. These efforts demonstrate the strong sense of solidarity within Kars during challenging winter conditions.
