Thousands of outdoor lovers from across Türkiye recently converged in Mersin to experience the Cilicia Way, a historical and natural trekking route that stretches 550 kilometres (342 miles) from Tisan to Tarsus. The event, part of the Historic Cilicia Way Project, offered participants an unforgettable two-day journey through nature and time.

342 miles, 4 main stages, and 38 unique trails through ancient history

Organized with the support of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, Mersin Governorship, and Zirve Mountaineering Club, the project showcases Mersin's archaeological richness and breathtaking natural landscapes. Divided into four major stages and comprising 38 different trails, the route aims to revive ancient roads while promoting eco-tourism and cultural heritage.

Over the course of two days, participants explored the Saglikli Berdan trail on the first day and the Camlica trail on the second, both offering stunning views of the Mediterranean and close encounters with relics of the ancient world.

'Walking this path was a dream come true'

Ali Riza Demir, President of Mersin Zirve Mountaineering Club, emphasized the dedication behind the five-year project.
"This was a dream we had for a long time. We presented it to Mayor Vahap Secer in 2019. He said, ‘Go ahead, full support,’ and now, five years later, it’s a reality,” he said proudly.

Club member Emel Beden shared her emotional connection to the trail: “Walking on this historic road, with friends, feeling the weight of the past and the joy of the present, was simply magical.”

'We lived 2,000 years ago today'

Sibel Baysal, President of Adana Zirve Mountaineering and Nature Sports Club, highlighted the deep historical resonance of the trail.
"Today, we lived as if we were 2,000 years in the past. It was truly special,” she remarked.

Orhan Kozan, another club president, stressed the importance of sustaining the project:
"The Cilicia Way is a great achievement. The key now is to ensure its sustainability and open it to international visitors."

Ali Cekematma, who joined from Gaziantep, compared the route to the famous Lycian Way:
"We hike the Lycian Way every year, but Cilicia is a strong alternative. We plan to bring our club here each spring and autumn to explore more.”
