Indonesia marked the 81st anniversary of its independence with celebrations across the country, including the traditional greased-pole climbing competition known as "Panjat Pinang," held in the capital, Jakarta.

Independence Day, known locally as Hari Kemerdekaan, commemorates the proclamation of Indonesian independence by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta on Aug. 17, 1945, and is observed annually as a national public holiday.

In Panjat Pinang, a tall areca palm trunk is coated in a slippery layer of grease or oil and set upright in the ground, with various prizes such as bicycles, household goods, and other items tied near the top.

Participants typically compete in teams rather than individually, since the slick surface of the pole makes it nearly impossible for a single climber to reach the top without support from others.

Climbers often form human chains, with some team members supporting others' feet or shoulders as they scale the trunk, a method of cooperation that has become closely associated with the spirit of the game.

Whoever manages to reach the summit of the pole is entitled to claim the prizes fastened there, though the climb frequently ends in participants sliding back down amid laughter from onlookers.

The tradition is believed to date back to the Dutch colonial era in Indonesia, when the game was known as "klimmast," and was originally staged during ceremonial occasions to entertain colonial officials.

Over time, Panjat Pinang has been reinterpreted by Indonesians as a symbol of perseverance, unity, and collective effort, values connected to the country's historical struggle for independence.

Alongside Panjat Pinang, communities across Indonesia also organize other traditional Independence Day games, including sack races known as "balap karung" and cracker-eating contests called "makan kerupuk."

While Independence Day celebrations officially culminate on Aug. 17, festivities and community competitions such as Panjat Pinang often begin in early August and can continue for several weeks in neighborhoods throughout the country.
