Snow is expected to return to Istanbul at the start of the week.
Accordingly, the General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) predict snow and snow-mixed rain on Monday. The system, which begins with rain over the weekend, is expected to turn into snow at the start of the week.
Authorities recommend taking precautions against icy roads and potential transportation disruptions.
According to MGM, temperatures in Istanbul are expected to drop below seasonal averages on Monday. Precipitation is expected to change from snow-mixed rain to snow, with accumulation in higher areas. The cold weather will continue at the start of the week, increasing the risk of icy conditions, especially in the morning and evening hours.
AKOM has warned residents to take precautions against snow and icy conditions. Drivers are advised to check winter tires or carry chains, and pedestrians should be careful to avoid slipping. Special care is recommended for the elderly and children when going outside.
On Monday, snow accumulation is expected in Istanbul’s higher areas and some central districts. Coastal areas will mostly experience snow-mixed rain, while the inner parts of both the European and Asian sides may see heavier snow.
Rain will dominate Istanbul over the weekend, but the situation will change at the start of the week. According to MGM, snow-mixed rain and occasional snow are expected on Monday. Temperatures will drop to 1–5 °C, increasing the risk of icy roads in the morning and evening. Light snow and cold weather will continue on Tuesday, with temperatures ranging from 0–4 °C. AKOM advises residents to plan transportation and daily activities with these weather conditions in mind.
