Spring may be on the calendar, but winter is tightening its grip across Türkiye.
The General Directorate of Meteorology said temperatures will fall 4 to 6 degrees Celsius across the country. Many regions will see rain, sleet, or snow for three days.
Authorities issued yellow-coded warnings for 30 provinces due to heavy snowfall and strong winds. Forecasters expect the system to weaken by Sunday, followed by sunshine and a sharp temperature rise on Monday, March 2.
The Istanbul Governor’s Office warned that strong northerly winds and colder air will take effect from Thursday evening.
Rain will begin across the city tonight. By early morning, districts including Catalca, Silivri, Arnavutkoy, Basaksehir, Beylikduzu, Buyukcekmece, Esenyurt, Eyup, Sultangazi, Cekmekoy, Sancaktepe, Umraniye, Sariyer, Beykoz, and Sile may see sleet. Higher elevations could receive light snowfall.
Winds will blow from the north at 30 to 50 kilometers per hour on Thursday and may strengthen to 40 to 60 kilometers per hour on Friday. Officials warned of transport disruptions, fallen trees, and roof damage.
Temperatures in Istanbul are expected to drop 2°C to 4°C below seasonal norms overnight. The forecast low stands at 1°C, with a high of 8°C on Friday.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center, AKOM, said the city will come under the influence of a Siberian-origin cold air mass. AKOM expects mostly cloudy skies and intermittent light precipitation through the week, with temperatures between 5°C and 8°C.
Meteorology expert Orhan Sen said Istanbul may see sleet in the early morning hours and that precipitation should leave the city by the afternoon.
The General Directorate of Meteorology issued yellow-coded warnings for 30 provinces, mainly in Eastern Anatolia and the Black Sea region.
Provinces under alert include Adiyaman, Artvin, Bingol, Bitlis, Diyarbakir, Elazig, Erzincan, Erzurum, Giresun, Gumushane, Hakkari, Kayseri, Malatya, Kahramanmaras, Mus, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Siirt, Sivas, Trabzon, Tunceli, Van, Yozgat, Bayburt, Batman, and Sirnak.
Heavy snowfall is expected in Eastern Anatolia and the Eastern Black Sea. Ordu and Siirt may also see intense precipitation. Northern districts of Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, and Batman face a higher risk of heavy snow.
In the southeastern part of Eastern Anatolia and the eastern part of Southeastern Anatolia, strong winds from the south are expected to reach 50 to 70 kilometers per hour.
Meteorology’s national forecast for Feb. 26 shows widespread precipitation across most regions except parts of the Aegean coast, Antalya, and Edirne.

Meteorology officials said snowfall will continue in many provinces through Saturday. Clear skies and a rapid temperature rise are forecast nationwide on Monday.
