A two-day "Turkic States Council Simulation" has got underway in Istanbul, bringing students together to debate regional issues, represent different Turkic states and draw up policy proposals in a school-based forum.
The event opened in Kadikoy on Saturday at Kadikoy Anadolu Imam Hatip High School, where the program began with a moment of silence followed by the Turkish national anthem.
Speaking at the opening, school principal Seyma Sahin said growing ties with the Turkic world in recent years had helped broaden young people's horizons. She said it was valuable for students to think through how different forms of cooperation could help them take part in the world, and to come together to discuss those ideas in depth.
Among the speakers was Isakulov Zhyldyzbek, former head of Kyrgyzstan's State Property Management Fund, who said young people were not only the next generation but also an active force today, with the ability to influence the economy, social life, culture, science and international cooperation.
He said he believed cooperation among young people from Turkish-speaking countries would keep moving forward. He also pointed to the importance of expanding academic exchange programs, joint university projects, scientific research and internship opportunities between their countries, adding that when young people study together, they build not only knowledge but also long-term friendships and partnerships.
A 10th-grade student, Belinay Bakirhan, said the event reminded young people of their responsibility to carry the strength of the past into the future.
As the program continues through Sunday, students will represent different Turkic states across eight commissions. Each commission will take up current issues, social needs and major challenges linked to the country and region it represents, before working out solutions and preparing concrete motions.
