It is not every day that one sees a cat strolling through the bustling streets of Istanbul—not on the ground, but perched gracefully on an owner’s shoulder. Reis, a 5-year-old feline who has earned the nickname “Istanbul’s traveling cat,” has been turning heads across the city for years. From the historic cobblestones of Sultanahmet to the vibrant squares of Taksim, Reis has accompanied his owner, fitness trainer Hakan Emrah, on countless city adventures, capturing the hearts of locals and tourists alike.
Now, this beloved city explorer has a new companion: His 7-month-old daughter, Pera. The father-daughter duo has begun venturing together into Istanbul’s streets, bringing double the charm and double the curiosity to every neighborhood they visit.
For nearly four years, Emrah has taken Reis to Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, including the Maiden’s Tower, Hagia Sophia, Sultanahmet, and Taksim Square. Over time, Reis has become widely recognized, stopping people in their tracks, attracting photographers, and even gaining international fans on social media.
According to Emrah, Pera began her outings with short walks and gradually became accustomed to crowds and the bustle of street life by following her father’s example. While Reis remains calm and prefers to stay on Emrah’s shoulder for extended periods, Pera exhibits a more curious and energetic demeanor, often moving between shoulders or exploring on the ground.
Emrah noted that tourists and locals frequently stop him to photograph the cats, drawn to the unusual sight of felines walking on shoulders. He emphasized that the practice requires patience and trust, stating that the cats’ confidence stems from the bond they share with their owner.
Reis reportedly enjoys sleeping during excursions and feels most secure perched on Emrah’s shoulder. Pera, on the other hand, occasionally seeks more movement, demonstrating the playful energy typical of her age.
While the majority of onlookers react positively to the cats, Emrah acknowledged that some individuals unfamiliar with animal behavior may misinterpret the activity as harmful.
For Emrah, exploring Istanbul with Reis and Pera has become a way of life. In addition to caring for his pets, he dedicates at least four hours daily to supporting Istanbul’s street cat population, reflecting his broader commitment to animal welfare.
