Istanbul’s water reserves have dropped to critical levels as hot summer months and low rainfall strain the city’s reservoirs, according to data from the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI).
As of Aug. 23, ISKI reported that the overall reservoir capacity had fallen to 44.08%, fueling public concern over how long the megacity’s water will last. While officials have not given an exact figure, current levels suggest reserves could last around four months if conditions remain unchanged.

The decline comes amid rising demand during extreme heat waves and declining rainfall across the Marmara region. Experts warn that without significant precipitation in the coming months, Türkiye’s largest city could face severe water stress.
