A fire that broke out on Thursday in a landfill area in the Aliaga district of Izmir has been brought under control after it spread rapidly to a nearby forest, authorities confirmed Friday.
The blaze began in the Bozkoy neighborhood, near industrial facilities, and was reportedly ignited by a person who was burning waste without permission.
Driven by strong winds, the flames quickly moved into forested terrain, prompting an extensive emergency response. The Izmir Regional Directorate of Forestry deployed six aircraft, five helicopters, 25 fire engines, nine water tenders and five bulldozers. Ground crews worked through the night, and the fire was contained after roughly 11 hours.
One residence was destroyed in the incident. The individual believed to have caused the fire has been taken into custody by gendarmerie teams as the investigation continues. Local authorities are monitoring the area to prevent any possible reignition.
