Airport officials announced that Kirkuk International Airport in northern Iraq has started night flights for the first time since it opened almost four years ago.
Herdi Samed, the airport's press officer, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the launch of night flights is part of a broader plan to improve service quality and overall performance at the airport.
Samed said that three of the weekly night flights will operate between Kirkuk and Istanbul, and the first night flight will also take this route. This change increases the total number of flights leaving the airport.
"Our goal is to increase the number of daily flights and give passengers more flexible travel options at any time of day," Samed told AA.
The airport also plans to expand its schedule, with officials saying that offering 24-hour passenger access is a main goal.
Kirkuk International Airport opened on October 16, 2022, with a ceremony attended by Iraq’s Transportation Minister at the time, Nasir Hussein. International flights to Türkiye began that same month, making the Kirkuk–Istanbul route one of the airport’s first.
This latest expansion helps the airport handle more traffic as Iraq works to improve its aviation infrastructure.
Officials have not provided a timeline for additional flights, but starting night operations is seen as an important step toward expanding the airport’s services.
