A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Osmaniye’s Sumbas district on Sunday after two earlier tremors hit the Saimbeyli district of neighboring Adana province, authorities said.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, or AFAD, said the first quake, with a magnitude of 4.8, was recorded in Saimbeyli at 2:19 p.m. local time at a depth of 7.99 kilometers.

A second magnitude 4.9 quake struck the same district at 2:36 p.m., at a depth of 8.67 kilometers, according to AFAD.

Minutes later, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded in Sumbas at 2:43 p.m. at a depth of 7 kilometers.

The distance between Adana and Osmaniye is about 94 kilometers by road.

AFAD said no adverse situation had been reported so far and that field survey work was continuing.

“Following the magnitude 4.8 earthquake that occurred at 2:19 p.m. in the Saimbeyli district of our Adana province, as of now, there is no adverse situation. Field survey work is continuing. We extend our wishes for a speedy recovery to our affected citizens,” AFAD said.

The tremors were also felt in neighboring provinces.

Adana was among the southern Turkish provinces affected by the massive Feb. 6, 2023, earthquakes, which killed over 53,500 people in Türkiye and nearly 6,000 in neighboring Syria.
