Magnitude 5.2 quake hits off Türkiye’s Mediterranean coast, felt in Antalya and Mersin

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Türkiye’s resort city of Antalya on Wednesday, shaking buildings and prompting concern across the region.

The quake occurred at 12:31 p.m. local time, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

Its epicenter was located off the coast, with tremors felt across Antalya province, as well as in the Anamur district of neighboring Mersin.

The earthquake was also reportedly felt across the island of Cyprus.

According to Greek Cypriot media, the earthquake’s epicenter was located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from the city of Paphos, at a depth of 15 kilometers.

The tremor, which lasted about 15 seconds, was felt across the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), particularly in the capital, Nicosia.

Meanwhile, a second earthquake measuring 4.8 struck the region 10 minutes later at a depth of 14 kilometers.

Officials from the TRNC Civil Defense Organization said the quake was felt throughout the country but that no problems were reported.
