The Met Gala once again positions itself as one of the most closely watched cultural events worldwide, blending fashion, art, and celebrity under one roof in New York City.
Held in support of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, the event raises funds for exhibitions and programming while drawing global media attention through its red carpet spectacle. Around 450 invited guests are expected to attend, maintaining the event’s deliberately limited scale and exclusivity.
This year’s exhibition, titled Costume Art, anchors the gala’s concept, with roughly 400 objects spanning 5,000 years set to go on display.
The official dress code, “Fashion Is Art,” encourages attendees to explore clothing as an artistic expression, reflecting how the dressed body has been represented across art history. The theme allows for wide interpretation, with potential references to movements such as the Renaissance, Baroque or Impressionism, as well as direct nods to iconic artworks.
As in previous years, the flexibility of the concept is expected to produce a diverse range of red carpet looks rather than a single dominant aesthetic.
The evening is led by Anna Wintour, who has overseen the guest list since 1995 and continues to personally approve every attendee.
She is joined by co-chairs Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams. Beyonce’s return marks her first appearance at the gala since 2016.
The host committee includes figures such as Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat and Zoe Kravitz, while Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos appear as co-chairs and sponsors. Their involvement has also prompted public criticism, with protest posters appearing near the museum referencing labor-related concerns.
The gala follows its long-standing schedule on the first Monday in May, with arrivals beginning in the evening local time. While the event itself remains closed to the public and governed by strict rules, including a no-selfie policy, the red carpet serves as its global stage.
Guests are invited inside for a private evening featuring dinner, cocktails, live performances and access to the new exhibition, though none of this is directly broadcast. Instead, international audiences engage with the event through extensive red carpet coverage.
Despite its closed-door nature, the event remains widely accessible online.
Vogue will stream the red carpet live across its digital platforms, including YouTube and TikTok, with additional coverage from global media outlets and social platforms.
The Met Gala remains one of the most expensive events in the cultural calendar. Individual tickets are reported to cost around $75,000, while tables can exceed $350,000.
However, most celebrity attendees do not pay directly. Fashion houses typically purchase tables and invite guests to wear their designs, turning attendance into a form of brand promotion.
