The Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS) has put out a yellow-level weather alert for 13 provinces, warning that a combination of rain, sleet, snow, strong winds, and frost is set to play out across large parts of Türkiye on Jan. 17.

In the Turkish warning system, a “yellow alert” signals potentially disruptive weather conditions that call for increased awareness, particularly for transport, outdoor work and daily travel.

Cloudy skies dominate as rain and wintry weather spread nationwide

According to TSMS forecasts, the country is expected to see generally partly to very cloudy skies. Rain and rain mixed with snow are forecast for the northeastern Marmara region, the northern districts of Balikesir, and the eastern parts of Kirklareli, as well as the areas around Osmaniye and Hatay.

At the same time, sleet and snowfall are expected to show up across a much wider belt.

These conditions are forecast to take hold across the Western and Eastern Black Sea regions, the southern and eastern sections of Central Anatolia, and across Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia. TSMS also listed Kahramanmaras, Ordu and Tokat among the provinces likely to be affected by mixed rain and snow.

Local heavy precipitation expected along Black Sea coast and inland provinces

While precipitation is forecast across many regions, TSMS noted that it could turn locally heavy in certain areas. The warning focuses on the Black Sea coastal belt and several inland provinces, including Sivas, Yozgat, Kayseri, Nevsehir and Aksaray, as well as Sinop, Bartin and Gumushane.

Artvin and the coastal areas of Kastamonu are also expected to face periods of stronger precipitation.

Strong northerly winds forecast for Marmara and northern Aegean

TSMS said winds would generally blow from northern directions at light to moderate strength across the country. However, Marmara and the northern Aegean are expected to see stronger winds, with gusts reaching 40 to 60 kilometers/hour.

Such wind speeds can affect ferry services, increase the wind chill effect and make driving more difficult, especially in exposed areas and during periods of precipitation.

Noticeable temperature drop inland and in the west, with frost risk overnight

Air temperatures are expected to fall by around 4 degrees Celsius to 6 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit to 11 degrees Fahrenheit) across inland and western regions, while no major change is expected elsewhere.

TSMS also warned that morning and nighttime hours could bring frost and icing to interior and eastern parts of the country, along with haze and locally dense fog. Frost refers to surface temperatures dropping below freezing, which can create slippery road conditions, while fog and haze can significantly reduce visibility.

Avalanche danger remains a concern in high-snow areas

Beyond rain, snow and wind, TSMS also flagged avalanche risk in regions with deep snow cover. This risk is concentrated in higher elevations of the inner Eastern Black Sea region and in the easternmost parts of Eastern Anatolia, particularly on steep slopes where snowpack instability is more likely.

Provinces under yellow alert

The provinces placed under a yellow alert are Artvin, Giresun, Gumushane, Kastamonu, Kayseri, Nevsehir, Rize, Sinop, Sivas, Trabzon, Yozgat, Aksaray and Bartin.

Weather snapshot for major cities

TSMS also shared brief outlooks for several major cities:

  • Istanbul is forecast at 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit), with partly to very cloudy skies and intermittent rain. Northern districts and higher elevations are expected to see rain mixed with snow.
  • Izmir is forecast at 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit), with partly cloudy conditions.
  • Ankara is forecast at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), under partly to very cloudy skies.
