Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (MSGSU) announced the death of its rector — the institution’s university president — Professor Handan Inci Elci at the age of 61, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our rector Professor Handan Inci Elci. We offer our condolences to her family, students and all who loved her.”

An academic path shaped in Istanbul

Born in 1964, Elci graduated in 1986 from Istanbul University’s Department of Turkish Language and Literature, and, under the supervision of Professor Zeynep Kerman, she went on to complete both her master’s and doctoral studies at the same university, building a scholarly profile that would later guide her teaching and leadership.

From classroom to leadership at MSGSU

After 1993, Elci began giving courses at MSGSU’s Faculty of Letters — a humanities faculty focusing on language and literature — and she continued to teach at various levels, gradually stepping into broader responsibilities that culminated in her service as rector, a role that oversees the university’s academic and administrative direction.

Recognized for Tanpinar scholarship

Known especially for her research on the writer Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar, Elci founded and led the Tanpinar Research Center at the end of 2017, and, through that work, she helped shape a focused platform for studying one of modern Turkish literature’s most influential figures in Türkiye and beyond.
