Burdur Governor Tulay Baydar Bilgihan announced a major astrobiology event for June at the tectonic lake Salda. NASA scientists and university researchers will join this program.

Experts from Istanbul Technical University and the University of California will coordinate scientific observations, according to the Türkiye daily. This initiative aims to transform the "Turkish Maldives" into a hub for science and sports tourism.

NASA previously linked Lake Salda to the Jezero Crater on Mars.

Both sites share similar biochemical structures. Governor Bilgihan wants to leverage this unique geology to attract students and researchers. Young people will participate in sky observations and scientific activities.

State enforces strict environmental limits

Government officials now prioritize environmental preservation over mass tourism.

Annual visitor numbers dropped from 1 million to approximately 300,000 under current state regulations. "We saw millions of visitors in the past, but we care about quality tourism," Bilgihan explained.

Authorities banned gasoline vehicles and mandated the use of electric transport within the area. Regulations also prohibit smoking and barbecues to maintain the ecological integrity of the lake. "We have to protect this natural wonder," she asserted.

Türkiye's first astronaut, Alper Gezeravci, will visit Burdur on April 27.

The administration plans to host him at Lake Salda following his recent space mission. The region also hosts growing athletic competitions. A recent duathlon attracted 460 participants, following a successful triathlon last year.
