Bozcaada, Türkiye’s pristine Aegean island known for its historic charm and distinctive culinary culture, has been selected by National Geographic as one of the “15 of the Best Places in the World for Food Right Now.”
Formerly known in antiquity as Tenedos, Bozcaada is historically referenced in classical literature, including Homer’s Iliad. The island’s long cultural history is reflected in its contemporary cuisine, which integrates Turkish and Greek culinary influences.
Local gastronomy is characterized by the use of Aegean herbs, olive oil-based dishes, fresh seafood, and traditional mezes. The island is also known for its homemade preserves and jams, as well as its longstanding winemaking tradition supported by indigenous grape varieties.
Resembling a small and tranquil coastal town, Bozcaada is distinguished by its narrow streets lined with well-preserved historic houses, seafood restaurants and one of Türkiye’s best-preserved castles. The island also attracts visitors with its unspoiled bays, clear and cold sea, and proximity to Istanbul, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourism.
In its assessment, National Geographic described Bozcaada as “one of Türkiye’s hidden gastronomic treasures,” highlighting its Aegean culinary character, viticulture culture, and distinctive island lifestyle. The publication also emphasized that Bozcaada represents not only a travel destination but also a significant center of gastronomy and cultural heritage.
The feature further noted the island’s locally produced food items and community-based production practices that reflect the broader gastronomic heritage of the Aegean region.
Bozcaada is reached via Geyikli Pier in Canakkale province. Travelers typically drive or take intercity transport to Geyikli, located approximately one hour from Canakkale city center.
From there, regular ferry services operate to Bozcaada throughout the day, with increased frequency during the summer season. Vehicles can also be transported on the ferries, although advance booking is recommended during peak travel periods.
From Istanbul, visitors can travel to Bozcaada either by road or by air, combined with road transport. The most common route is by car or bus to Geyikli via Canakkale, followed by a ferry crossing to the island.
The road journey typically takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and ferry schedules. Another option is that travelers can fly from Istanbul to Canakkale Airport or nearby airports and continue by road to Geyikli Pier before taking the ferry to Bozcaada.
