U.S. actor Nicholas Brendon, widely recognized for his role in the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," has died at the age of 54, his family announced on March 20, 2026.

According to a statement shared on social media, Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes. The family did not disclose further details regarding the time or place of his death while also asking for privacy as they mourn his loss.

Defining role that shaped a generation of television

Brendon became best known for playing Xander Harris, one of the central characters in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," which ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003. The series followed Buffy, a teenage girl tasked with fighting vampires and other supernatural threats while navigating everyday high school life.

Within the show, Brendon’s character stood out as a loyal and grounded friend to Buffy, helping anchor the series’ mix of action, drama, and humor. His performance contributed to the show's lasting popularity among international audiences, including viewers across Europe and beyond.

Career that extended beyond one iconic series

Although his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer remained his most widely recognized work, Brendon also took on parts in several other television productions. These included appearances in Criminal Minds, Private Practice, and Kitchen Confidential.

In addition to television, he appeared in a number of thriller films, expanding his career across different genres and formats.

In recent years, Brendon shifted his focus toward painting and visual art, a passion his family highlighted as deeply personal. In their statement, they described his creative work as a reflection of his character, emphasizing his drive to create and connect with others through art.

The family also referenced his health challenges, noting that he had previously shared undergoing two spinal surgeries and experiencing a heart attack in 2023. Despite these struggles, he remained active in engaging with fans and pursuing artistic expression.

In their message, Brendon’s family reflected on his personality and creative spirit, stating: “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years… His art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

They described him as passionate, sensitive, and driven, adding that he loved sharing his work with family, friends, and fans. The statement concluded with a request for privacy as they grieve while also celebrating his life.
