The Sason district of Batman has achieved official recognition, as ‘Sason Honey’ has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) registration by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, following an application submitted by the local administration in 2023.

What sets Sason honey apart is its proline value—a scientific measure that reflects the richness of a honey’s floral source.

While high-quality honeys often score in the 800–900 range, Sason honey records exceptional values between 1600 and 1700, confirming the district’s extraordinary biodiversity and the bees’ access to a wide variety of plants.

At the Governor’s Office ceremony, District Governor Furkan Basar presented the official GI certificate to the Governor and Acting Mayor Ekrem Canalp.

In his remarks, Canalp highlighted that Sason honey is not only one of Türkiye’s finest but also among the most outstanding honeys worldwide.

“This precious honey is now officially protected and recognized,” Canalp stated proudly. “We are honored to present it not only to Türkiye but to the world.”

Türkiye's sweetest treasures, famous honeys

Sason honey now joins Türkiye’s renowned honey varieties, including Tunceli's Munzur honey, Rize’s rare Anzer honey, Black Sea chestnut honey, and other regional specialties like thyme, sunflower, and citrus honeys—together making Türkiye one of the world’s leading honey producers.

Here is one of the best-known honey varieties:

  • Pine Honey—Mostly produced in Mugla, Türkiye, it supplies more than 90% of the world’s pine honey. Dark, less sweet and mineral-rich, it stands apart as a honeydew honey rather than a floral nectar honey.
  • Anzer Honey—Collected from the Anzer Plateau in Rize, this rare honey is world famous for its medicinal and antioxidant properties. It is among the most expensive honeys due to its scarcity and therapeutic reputation.

  • Munzur Honey – Produced in Tunceli’s Munzur Mountains, this high-quality honey is celebrated for its unique flavor and richness. It has gained international acclaim, winning a gold medal at the London International Honey Awards.
  • Chestnut Honey – A specialty of the Black Sea region, this strong-flavored honey is slightly bitter but rich in antioxidants and linked to respiratory health.
  • Thyme Honey – Produced in mountainous and plateau regions, thyme honey is highly aromatic and often valued in traditional remedies.
  • Sunflower Honey – Commonly produced in Thrace and Central Anatolia, sunflower honey is light, mild, and widely enjoyed on breakfast tables.
  • Flower Honey—The most common variety across Türkiye, made from diverse blossoms, offering a classic sweetness beloved nationwide.
