Eastern Anatolia has been hit hard by freezing temperatures following days of snowfall, with Erzurum’s Karacoban district recorded as Türkiye’s coldest location overnight at minus 30.3 degrees Celsius (minus 22.5 degrees Fahrenheit), according to data from the General Directorate of Meteorology.
Karacoban was followed by Bezirhane village in Van’s Caldiran district at minus 28 degrees Celsius and Bulanik in Mus at minus 26.3 degrees Celsius.
In Erzurum city center, where temperatures dropped to minus 12 degrees Celsius, parked vehicle windows froze over and streets and sidewalks were coated in ice. Icicles formed along rooftops, and some public fountains were completely frozen.
In Kars, temperatures fell to minus 19.7 degrees Celsius, freezing streams and lakes as frost blanketed vegetation and trees. Residents covered their vehicles with blankets and carpets to protect them from the bitter cold.
In Sarikamis, homes, workplaces and vehicles were coated in ice, while long icicles formed on rooftops and natural gas vents.
Municipal and highway maintenance teams launched snow-clearing and salting operations.
Snowfall and cold weather continue to affect life in Ardahan, where icy roads have disrupted transportation in some areas. Many drivers covered their vehicles to shield them from the freezing conditions.
In Tunceli, temperatures dropped to minus 6 degrees Celsius overnight. Vehicle windows froze, and small ponds partially iced over, prompting municipality crews to carry out salting work on slippery roads.
In Agri, temperatures hovered around minus 20 degrees Celsius as snow gave way to intense frost and fog, reducing visibility across the province. Rivers and streams froze, and residents heading to work in the early morning struggled on icy streets.
Those traveling to the livestock market faced particularly harsh conditions, with frost forming on their hair and eyebrows.
