The General Directorate of Meteorology in Türkiye has issued a warning for widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall expected on May 8. According to the latest forecast, 22 provinces, including parts of the Black Sea, Central and Eastern Anatolia, as well as southeastern regions such as Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Batman, and Siirt, are set to experience severe weather conditions.

Areas like the Toros Mountains in the Mediterranean, the interior of Antalya, and much of Central Anatolia will also see intense local downpours.

Dust storms over Southern Türkiye

The weather agency has also warned of dust transport from Africa affecting the Southern Aegean and Western Mediterranean, which may lead to reduced visibility, poor air quality, and muddy rainfall.

Fierce winds in Aegean

Strong winds from the south and southwest, reaching speeds of 40–60 kilometers per hour, are forecast across the Southern and Inland Aegean regions. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects and be cautious of falling branches or minor structural damage.

Regional forecast summary

  • Marmara: Mostly cloudy, light rain around Kirklareli, clearing later in the day.
  • Aegean: Cloudy skies clearing over time, strong southern winds, and dust transport in southern parts.
  • Mediterranean: Storms over the Toros area and parts of Antalya, dust expected in the western parts.
  • Central Anatolia: Scattered thunderstorms in the morning and noon over Kayseri, Sivas, Nigde, and nearby provinces.
  • Black Sea (West, Central, East): Widespread thunderstorms, easing toward evening.
  • Eastern Anatolia: Rain and thunderstorms throughout the region, becoming partly cloudy later.
  • Southeastern Anatolia: Rain and local storms in Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Batman, and Siirt.

Temperatures across Türkiye are expected to remain above seasonal averages, adding a layer of discomfort to the already turbulent weather pattern.

Weather warnings issued

  • Strong Wind Alert: Winds in the Southern and Inland Aegean could reach up to 60 km/h.
  • Dust Transport Warning: Dust storms may affect transportation, air quality, and visibility in Southern Aegean and Western Mediterranean areas.
