Snowfall continued across parts of Istanbul on Monday, affecting northern, western and high altitude districts. It covered streets, rooftops, parked cars and green areas in white, as daily life adjusted to winter conditions across many parts of the city.
Intermittent snowfall affected Buyukcekmece, Bagcilar, Kucukcekmece, Sultangazi, Basaksehir, Beylikduzu and Arnavutkoy on the European side, while Umraniye, Cekmekoy and Beykoz saw snow on the Asian side. Camlica Hill in Uskudar and forested areas near Aydos also turned white.
Snow covered main roads, streets and green areas and drivers have moved cautiously in affected districts. Municipal and highway teams positioned snow response vehicles on major roads and intersections as precipitation continued.
Istanbul Governorate announced a one day suspension of in person education on Monday January 12, 2026 due to adverse weather conditions. The decision applies to all public and private schools, education centers, vocational and driving courses, rehabilitation centers and support courses.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality disaster coordination unit AKOM entered alarm status on Sunday evening as a cold air system reached the city. Light snowfall began after 03.00 in Catalca and Arnavutkoy before spreading intermittently across Istanbul.
AKOM said snowfall may intensify in some districts and continue until Tuesday morning. Temperatures may rise gradually from Wednesday January 14.
Municipal crews continue snow clearing and salting operations in affected districts. Teams also respond to traffic incidents and fallen trees or poles.
Shelter services continue for homeless residents, while logistics teams distribute food and hot drinks at major transport hubs. Veterinary teams provide care for stray animals during cold weather.
