Social media platforms are once again under scrutiny as a new "death game" trend, the A4 challenge, gains popularity among young users. This dangerous challenge encourages children and teenagers to aim for extreme weight loss by attempting to fit their bodies within the width of an A4 sheet of paper in a mirror reflection. Participants then share photos of their bodies fitting within the paper's frame, seeking likes and followers.
The alarming trend is the latest in a series of social media challenges that endanger young users. Experts are warning parents to monitor their children's online activities closely, as these challenges often lead to serious health risks.
According to an exclusive report by Ziyneti Kocabiyik in Türkiye daily, the A4 challenge is a continuation of a worrying pattern of dangerous online challenges targeting children and teenagers. The concept is simple but harmful: young people strive to make their bodies appear as slim as an A4 sheet of paper when viewed in the mirror. They then post photos of this attempt on social media, seeking attention and validation through likes, comments, and followers.
Medical experts warn that this challenge promotes unhealthy weight loss behaviors, leading to potential eating disorders, malnutrition, and severe health consequences.
Dr. Cemre Yasoz, a pediatric expert speaking at the 60th Turkish Pediatrics Congress, highlighted the growing danger of social media challenges among young people. "These challenges are becoming increasingly hazardous," Yasoz stated. "Children are exposed to peer pressure and a desire for validation, making them more susceptible to risky behaviors."
Yasoz explained that many young users are driven to participate in these challenges due to their impulsive nature and the strong influence of social media, where more dangerous content often gains more visibility.
Experts advise parents to remain vigilant and maintain open communication with their children about social media use. “Children need to understand that their value is not determined by likes or followers,” Yasoz emphasized.
The A4 challenge is just one of many dangerous trends that have appeared on social media platforms, and the situation highlights the urgent need for greater digital awareness and safety measures for young users.
