Water-grown tulips produced through soilless farming methods in Antalya are seeing strong domestic demand, company officials said.
Growers in Serik ship up to 500,000 flowers a year to major cities across Türkiye.
Produced in the Serik district’s Belek Tourism Center, these water-grown tulips are shipped to many cities across the country, including major metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Izmir, and Ankara.
Flash Tarim and Aktif Fide began water-based tulip production about 19 years ago to bring tulips back to their homeland.
Imported bulbs are placed upright in water containers and kept in cold storage for about a month. After rooting, the tulips are moved into greenhouses, where they continue growing in water-filled crates until harvest.
Anil Yolcular Irik, an agricultural engineer and operations manager at the company, said the firm has been producing tulips in water culture for 19 years.
He noted that production is focused on special occasions and follows a limited seasonal cycle.
“We produce between 300,000 and 500,000 a year,” Irik told Anadolu Agency (AA). “Our production season lasts four months.”
He added that the company is currently working to meet demand for Feb. 14.
Irik said all of the company’s tulip production is sold within Türkiye.
“For now, we have no exports, but we have efforts underway. Our priority is the domestic market,” he said. “Demand is very strong, and we are having difficulty keeping up.”
The company grows tulips in a range of colors, including pink, yellow, purple, white, and bicolor varieties.
Irik said water-based cultivation provides significant advantages, including space efficiency compared with soil farming.
He also said the tulips are produced naturally, without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
