Russia’s annual Tulip Festival welcomed visitors to the Elagin Island in St. Petersburg on May 16–17, bringing together colorful spring scenery, live music and cultural events as one of the city’s best-known seasonal celebrations returned in an updated format.

This year's spring music and floral festival is taking place across selected weekends in May and has once again turned Elagin Island into a large open-air display of blooming tulips and cultural performances.

Tulips take center stage

Festival preparations began months before spring arrived, with park specialists planting more than 225,000 tulip bulbs in autumn 2025 to prepare for this year’s event. Visitors can now walk through seven large flowerbeds featuring popular European tulip varieties, including Alicante, Sunny Prince and White, selected for their vivid colors and ability to adapt to changing weather conditions.

Often associated with springtime in St. Petersburg, the festival has grown into one of the city’s major seasonal attractions, combining floral design, music and public events across Elagin Island.

Organizers also built this year’s concept around poetry, drawing inspiration from Russian poet Nikolai Agnivtsev, who once described the island as the “flower in the buttonhole of Petersburg.” According to the festival concept, this comparison shaped the musical atmosphere of the event, with live performances taking place near the Flag Pavilion among blooming pathways.

Palace exhibitions and cultural events

In addition to outdoor displays, the Elagin Palace Museum is hosting a special exhibition in the ceremonial dining hall of the building, where visitors can view decorative compositions made from sugar, caramel and chocolate. Organizers described the installations as artistic creations inspired by European court traditions rather than ordinary desserts.

The festival is unfolding in two stages, with events taking place on May 16–17 during peak blooming season and continuing on May 23–24 for the final days of the program. Guests are expected to take part in a packed schedule featuring waterside concerts, workshops and evening dance events.

Festival activities also spread across the island’s larger public spaces, where visitors can browse a market offering handmade jewelry, perfumes and artisan goods. A dedicated florarium area has also been set up for gardening enthusiasts interested in rare plants.
