A red fox was recently captured moving across the snow-covered terrain in the Sarikamis district of Kars, eastern Türkiye, where winter dominates much of the year. The species, known scientifically as Vulpes vulpes, is one of the most widely distributed mammals globally.
Sarikamis is among Türkiye’s highest settlements, with long and severe winters that reshape the landscape for months. Thick snow cover limits visibility and restricts access to food sources for wildlife.
In these conditions, survival becomes a daily challenge. Small mammals remain hidden beneath the snow, forcing predators to rely on sound and instinct rather than sight.
Red foxes are highly adaptable omnivores, able to shift their diet depending on availability. While they prefer rodents and rabbits, they can also consume birds, insects, fruit, and even human waste when necessary.
Their success lies in their ability to adjust to different environments, from remote mountain regions to farmland and urban edges. This flexibility has earned them a reputation for intelligence and resilience.
Despite their wide distribution, red foxes are solitary hunters, moving and feeding alone rather than in groups. Each individual must locate and secure their own food, particularly in winter when resources are scarce.
Physical traits also play a role in their survival. Their thick fur provides insulation, while their bushy tail helps with balance and can be used as cover against the cold.
While winter continues in eastern Türkiye, red foxes remain active across the frozen terrain, adapting to conditions that limit many other species.
