Researchers at the University of Tsukuba, located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Tokyo, examined how a short, low-intensity run affects the brain, according to a study covered by a Turkish-language outlet.

The study involved 24 healthy young adults. Participants ran on a treadmill at a pace of approximately 3 to 6 kilometers (1.9 to 3.7 miles) per hour for 10 minutes, roughly the speed of a brisk walk.

Their heart rates remained between 104 and 107 beats per minute during the exercise. Researchers used sensors to track oxygen levels in blood at the surface of the brain throughout the session.

Faster response times on attention and self-control tests

Researchers compared participants' performance with a control condition in which they sat still for 10 minutes.

The results showed that after the short, slow jog, response times on tests measuring attention and self-control were noticeably shorter than after the resting condition.

The study also found an increased flow of oxygen-rich blood to the left prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with decision-making, planning, and emotional regulation.

Participants reported feeling more alert, energetic, and in a better mood following the exercise.

The researchers said the findings suggest that brief physical activity, even without intense exertion, can positively affect cognitive function and mood.
