Turkish celebrity chef Arda Turkmen said he found a small live worm moving on his plate while dining at a one-Michelin-starred restaurant in France, adding that the restaurant's response left him surprised.
Turkmen shared the incident on social media after the dinner, asking his followers how they would describe what happened and offering several options ranging from an understandable kitchen mistake to a scandal.
He said he only noticed the worm after eating roughly half of the dish.
After spotting the worm, Turkmen said he called over a waiter and suggested that the chef might want to see the plate.
According to Turkmen, the waiter responded by referring to the greens on the plate, an explanation that he found inadequate.
The restaurant later offered him an additional course as well as complimentary tea and coffee.
However, Turkmen said the chef did not come over to personally explain the incident or apologize, even though the chef was nearby. He added that the chef left the kitchen after service ended without speaking to them.
Turkmen also said the restaurant charged the group the full per-person price of its fixed menu, meaning a pre-set selection of courses served for a set price.
Reflecting on the incident, Turkmen said he normally tried to be understanding about mistakes but believed responsibility should also be taken when due.
"I am usually an understanding person about these things and always say that everyone can make mistakes, but responsibility also needs to be taken. It did not suit this level," he said.
