While searching for his hotel in New York City, Turkish doctor Erol Gursoy encountered a man who had suddenly collapsed on the street. With no time to lose, Gursoy dropped his luggage and administered emergency CPR, saving the man’s life—without even knowing who he was.

It was only the next day that Gursoy, working as a visiting observer at Mount Sinai Hospital, learned the identity of the person he had saved: Lee Shulman, the Senior Vice President of Wall Street powerhouse Janney.

A chance encounter turns Into a life-saving mission

Erol Gursoy, an associate professor at Koc University Hospital in Türkiye, had just arrived in New York to begin his observer duties at one of the city’s largest medical centers—Mount Sinai. As he walked the streets of Manhattan, luggage in hand, he saw a man suddenly collapse in front of him.

“I turned him to the side to open the airway, as per basic first aid protocol,” Gursoy explained. “He had no pulse and wasn’t breathing, so I immediately began chest compressions.”

Working alone for several intense minutes, Gursoy continued CPR until just before the ambulance arrived. “Seconds before the medics came, his heart started beating again. He began breathing and regained consciousness,” he said.

1 percent chance of survival

The man was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital. The next day, while reviewing patient records, Gursoy found his name listed as the doctor who had provided “five uninterrupted minutes of CPR” to a critical patient—Lee Shulman.

Medical tests revealed that one of Shulman’s arteries was 100 percent blocked, while another was 99 percent obstructed. His survival had been deemed a near impossibility—a one percent chance, according to doctors.

Wall Street legend narrowly escapes death

Lee Shulman is not just any New Yorker. He is one of Wall Street’s veteran figures, with more than 46 years of experience in investment banking and wealth management.

Currently serving as Senior Vice President at Janney, a major financial firm founded in 1832, Shulman has built a prestigious career specializing in equity valuation and technical analysis. Before joining Janney in 2008, he spent more than three decades at Merrill Lynch.

Thanks to the quick action of Dr. Gursoy, the financial world narrowly avoided losing one of its most seasoned voices.
