Türkiye and Syria have agreed to open Turkish language departments at the universities of Damascus and Aleppo starting from the 2025–2026 academic year, as part of cooperation protocols covering the education sector.

The agreement includes developing joint curricula, sending Turkish academics to Syrian universities, according to Syria TV.

The agreement will also enable the mutual recognition and equivalence of academic degrees. High school graduates will be able to list the new department among their preferences in this year’s university admission process.

The agreement coincides with a growing interest among Syrian students in learning the Turkish language, particularly in Aleppo, where several private institutes and language centers have opened over the past two years.

Observers say establishing Turkish language teaching as an academic discipline will open new horizons for Syrian students and lay the groundwork for lasting cooperation between Syria and Türkiye.

Educational cooperation protocol

The latest development follows a series of educational initiatives launched under a cooperation protocol between the two countries.

In July, the Turkish Ministry of National Education and the Syrian Ministry of Education signed a joint cooperation protocol in Damascus, marking a significant step toward restoring educational ties.

The agreement includes plans to rehabilitate war-damaged schools across Syria, expand learning opportunities for Syrian youth, and strengthen cultural and academic collaboration.

In August, Aleppo University in northern Syria introduced Arabic language courses for non-native speakers as part of a joint program with Türkiye’s Ibn Khaldun University.

These initiatives are viewed as part of a broader framework aimed at fostering educational and cultural exchange between the two neighboring nations.
