What started as a simple effort to improve grazing conditions soon became something much greater. In a rural pasture in Kayseri, villagers who had struggled for years with low rainfall decided to take matters into their own hands.

Using their own resources, they dug a small irrigation channel to keep the land fertile for longer and ensure their animals could continue grazing without disruption. What began as a practical response to a growing challenge soon changed the landscape in unexpected ways.

As the seasons changed, nature quietly responded to the villagers’ effort. Rain and melting snow began to flow through the newly carved channel, gathering in a natural low-lying area known as Berdilik.

Little by little, water spread across the pasture until a temporary lake was formed, covering more than half of the 75-hectare grazing land. What had once been dry and fragile soil transformed into a living, water-fed landscape.

This unexpected shift brought immediate benefits for the community. The renewed moisture kept the grasslands green for much longer than usual, extending the grazing season well into the warmer months. For nearly 20,000 small livestock animals, this meant more stable access to food and a healthier, more sustainable environment.

The villagers’ original goal was being fulfilled, but the land was offering even more in return than they had imagined.

Soon, the transformation extended beyond livestock. The temporary wetland began attracting a wide variety of birds, turning the quiet pasture into a vibrant ecological stopover. Among the most striking visitors were flamingos, locally known as “alli turna.”

These migratory birds, often associated with larger wetlands such as Tuzla Palas Lake, found the newly formed lake to be a suitable resting and feeding ground.

What makes this transformation even more remarkable is its simplicity. There was no large infrastructure project or planned environmental restoration. Instead, a community’s small collective effort set off a chain reaction that reshaped the local ecosystem.

A single channel, dug by hand, became the starting point for a temporary wetland that now supports both agriculture and wildlife.
