Türkiye bids farewell to philosopher and human rights scholar Ioanna Kucuradi

Renowned philosopher and human rights scholar Ioanna Kucuradi was buried at the Sisli Greek Orthodox Cemetery following ceremonies attended by Patriarch Bartholomew.

Professor Ioanna Kucuradi, known for her work in philosophy and human rights, was laid to rest in Istanbul following a funeral ceremony held at Maltepe University.

Kucuradi served as president of the Philosophical Society of Türkiye and honorary president of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies.

Final ceremony held at Greek Orthodox cemetery

Following the ceremony at Maltepe University, Kucuradi's funeral was taken to the Sisli Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Istanbul.

A religious service was then held at the church inside the cemetery, with Patriarch Bartholomew among those attending.

Kucuradi was buried after the service.

Who was Ioanna Kucuradi?

Born in Istanbul on Oct. 4, 1936, Kucuradi graduated from Zappeion Girls' High School in 1954 before completing her studies at Istanbul University's Department of Philosophy in 1959. She received her doctorate in 1965.

After working at Ataturk University in Erzurum between 1965 and 1968, she became an associate professor in 1970 and a professor in 1978.

Kucuradi founded Hacettepe University's Department of Philosophy in 1969 and headed the department until 2003. From 1997 onward, she also led the university's Center for Research and Application of the Philosophy of Human Rights and chaired the UNESCO Chair established within the center.

Alongside serving as president of the Philosophical Society of Türkiye, Kucuradi took on several roles within the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and also served as its president.

Her academic work focused on philosophy, ethics, human rights and values, while she also held positions in a number of national and international organizations.

Her published works included "Nietzsche and Human Being," "Schopenhauer and Human Being," "Human and Values, Ethics," "Looking at Art Through Philosophy" and "Among the Events of the Age."

Kucuradi received a number of honors for her work, including the Goethe Medal, an award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences, the Press Freedom Award of the Turkish Journalists' Association and several international honorary awards.
