Human rights philosopher Ioanna Kucuradi dies at 90

Professor Ioanna Kucuradi, a philosopher known for her work on philosophy and human rights, has died at the age of 90, Anadolu Agency reported.

Kucuradi, president of the Philosophy Society of Türkiye and honorary president of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, died at the Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul, where she was receiving treatment.

Her funeral will be held today at the Mimar Vedat Cakirca Conference Hall at Maltepe University.

She will then be buried at the Sisli Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Istanbul.

Career

Kucuradi was born in Istanbul on Oct. 4, 1936. She graduated from Zapyon Girls' High School in 1954 and from the philosophy department of Istanbul University in 1959 and earned her doctorate in 1965.

She worked at Ataturk University in Erzurum, in eastern Türkiye, from 1965 to 1968. She became an associate professor in 1970 and a full professor in 1978.

In 1969, Kucuradi founded the philosophy department at Hacettepe University in the capital, Ankara, and headed it until 2003.

From 1997, she directed the university's Human Rights and Philosophy Application and Research Center and chaired the UNESCO Chair established within it.

She also held several posts at the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and served as its president.

Works and awards

Her books include "Nietzsche and Man" ("Nietzsche ve Insan"), "Man and His Values" ("Insan ve Degerleri") and "Ethics" ("Etik").

Her honors include the Goethe Medal, the Türkiye Academy of Sciences Award, and the Journalists Association of Türkiye Press Freedom Award, along with several international honorary awards.
