A typical day in Türkiye is still shaped first and foremost by sleep, but how people spend their waking hours is changing fast.

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) 2025 Time Use Survey, sleep remains the most time-consuming daily activity. The average sleep duration was recorded at 8 hours and 55 minutes.

Women reported slightly higher sleep duration at 9 hours per day, compared to 8 hours and 49 minutes for men. Sleep duration also varied by days of the week, averaging 8 hours and 41 minutes on weekdays and rising to 9 hours and 28 minutes on weekends.

Following sleep, individuals spend the most time on personal care and basic activities, including eating, which averages 3 hours and 15 minutes per day. Employment-related activities account for 2 hours and 25 minutes daily on average, while household and family care activities take 2 hours and 22 minutes.

Among employed individuals, the average time spent on work-related activities was 5 hours and 41 minutes per day. Disaggregated by gender, employed men worked an average of 6 hours daily, while employed women worked 4 hours and 58 minutes.

The survey also highlights a persistent gender gap in unpaid domestic work. Women aged 15 and over spend an average of 4 hours and 3 minutes per day on household and family care, compared to 58 minutes for men.

Among employed individuals, women dedicate 2 hours and 38 minutes to domestic responsibilities, while employed men spend 47 minutes. For non-employed individuals, the corresponding figures are 4 hours and 33 minutes for women and 1 hour and 17 minutes for men.

Social media usage up while traditional media declines

In terms of age distribution, individuals aged 15–24 allocate the highest share of their time to social life and leisure activities. In contrast, those aged 55 and over spend more time watching television, listening to the radio or music, and participating in meetings.

Sporting and outdoor activities remain the least time-consuming category, averaging 12 minutes per day. Men spend 16 minutes on such activities, while women spend 9 minutes.

Comparative analysis by age group shows that children aged 10–14 devote the most time to sleep, education, hobbies, and sports activities.

Television viewing remains the most widespread leisure activity at 88.8%, followed by social media engagement at 71.7% and visiting relatives at 67.5%.

Conversely, traditional media consumption has declined, with newspaper and magazine readership falling from 39.4% in 2015 to 20.1% in 2025.

In sports participation, football engagement declined from 5.2% to 4.1% over the same period, while volleyball participation increased from 0.9% to 1.4%.
