Türkiye issues yellow coded weather alert for 15 provinces

Türkiye’s Interior Ministry and the Meteorology General Directorate issued a yellow-coded weather warning for 15 provinces on Thursday, Jan. 22, as a widespread winter system brings heavy rain, snowfall, strong winds and avalanche risk across large parts of the country.
Locally severe precipitation is expected in coastal regions, while inland and eastern areas will see snow and mixed precipitation.
Meteorology states that much of the country experiences cloudy conditions with precipitation across Marmara, the Aegean, the Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, inland Western and Central Black Sea, parts of Southeastern Anatolia, and southern and western Eastern Anatolia, excluding Van and Hakkari.
Coastal areas receive rain and thunderstorms, while inland regions see rain mixed with snow. Higher elevations and parts of eastern Türkiye are expected to face snowfall.

The yellow-coded warning covered the following provinces:
- Adiyaman
- Antalya
- Aydin
- Balikesir
- Burdur
- Gaziantep
- Hatay
- Isparta
- Izmir
- Manisa
- Kahramanmaras
- Mugla
- Sanliurfa
- Kilis
- Osmaniye
Authorities warn that heavy rain can trigger flooding and water accumulation in urban areas. Lightning, local hail and waterspout risk exist along parts of the coast.

Yellow-coded alert: Turkish provinces facing highest risk
Forecast details shared by Meteorology describe the following high-risk zones:
- Coastal Aegean: Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected from morning hours, starting in the north of the region, with locally strong precipitation around Izmir, Aydin and Mugla, as well as parts of western Manisa and the western coastal districts of Balikesir.
- Western Mediterranean: Strong precipitation is expected across Antalya province, with the city center and western districts flagged for very strong rainfall totals. Interior and higher areas above 1,000 meters might see rain mixed with snow.
- Eastern part of the Eastern Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia: Snowfall is expected to be strong in and around Gaziantep, Kilis and Adiyaman, with parts of southern Kahramanmaras, eastern Osmaniye and western Sanliurfa also included in the heavy snow band.
Meteorology also issues warnings for icing and frost across inland and eastern Türkiye. Avalanche risk exists in steep, high-elevation areas with deep snow cover in the inland Eastern Black Sea and eastern Eastern Anatolia.

Expected high temperatures across major Turkish cities
Meteorology publishes daily maximum temperatures alongside general conditions.
Below are key city highs for Thursday:
- Istanbul: 9 degrees Celsius, intermittent showers with locally heavy rain in the morning
- Ankara: 5 degrees Celsius, rain and rain mixed with snow mixed with snowfall in northern and higher areas
- Izmir: 14 degrees Celsius, showers and thunderstorms with locally very strong rainfall
- Antalya: 14 degrees Celsius, intermittent showers with locally severe rainfall
- Adana: 11 degrees Celsius, intermittent rain
- Diyarbakir: 3 degrees Celsius, rain mixed with snow and snowfall after midday
- Erzurum: minus 3 degrees Celsius, cloudy conditions
- Trabzon: 14 degrees Celsius, cloudy conditions
- Samsun: 13 degrees Celsius, cloudy conditions
Rain mixed with snow or snowfall affects Ankara, Cankiri, Afyon, Isparta, Eskisehir, Kayseri, Bolu, Malatya, Batman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep and Siirt.
Coastal provinces, including Istanbul, Izmir, Adana, Antalya and Hatay receive rainfall.
Meteorology states that air temperatures increase across northern, inland and western regions. Northern areas remain above seasonal norms, while other regions stay near seasonal averages.
