About 300 nature lovers carried a 100-meter Turkish flag through a forest ablaze with autumn colors in the northeastern province of Gumushane to mark the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.

The Youth and Flag Walk began at the Haskoy Plateau and ended at the Tembeda Plateau after a route of roughly 6 kilometers. Participants walked beneath trees that turned yellow, orange and red.

Mayor hails autumn setting at Republic Day walk

Gumushane Mayor Vedat Soner Baser, who joined the event, congratulated residents on the anniversary and said the setting made the occasion special.

"We walked through the forest. The weather is beautiful, and nature is beautiful," Baser said. He thanked everyone who helped organize the event.

Mucahit Atalay, the provincial director of youth and sports, said the walk was organized in honor of the Republic’s anniversary.

He said the 300 participants made their way along the 6-kilometer route surrounded by the region’s fall scenery.

Esma Yurek, a university student who took part, said the group had come together on a meaningful day.

"We unfurled our flag amid the autumn colors and walked," Yurek said. "It was a lovely walk. I thank everyone who contributed."

Türkiye celebrates Republic Day on Oct. 29, marking the proclamation of the republic in 1923 under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
