Two more people died from West Nile virus in Greece between Oct. 16 and 22, bringing the country's death toll to 51 since the beginning of 2026, according to the National Public Health Organization (EODY).
The agency reported 453 confirmed infections as of Oct. 22, while 12 patients remained in intensive care. Those who died from the virus ranged in age from 36 to 92.
Athens and its surrounding areas have recorded the highest concentration of West Nile virus infections in Greece, according to EODY's latest figures.
The agency identified Nea Smyrni, Nea Filadelfia, Dafni, Nikaia and Peristeri, all districts in the greater Athens metropolitan area, among the locations considered most at risk.
The latest fatalities show that West Nile virus-related deaths have continued into October, with two deaths recorded during the Oct. 16-22 reporting period.
Another two people had died from the virus in the preceding week, according to EODY, as health authorities continued tracking infections across the country.
