Warm weather continues across much of Türkiye despite the final days of November, with temperatures in the west staying above seasonal norms.

Reservoir levels remain low in several provinces, which increases concern about drought.

Meteorology experts warn that this mild period will end soon, as a colder system moves in next week, followed by a stronger winter pattern in December and January.

Cooler air arrives in Türkiye on Monday with widespread rain

Forecasts show that the north, interior regions, and western provinces will turn more cloudy in the coming days.

Southern Aegean districts and western Balikesir may see local showers at night, while high areas in Central Anatolia may receive mixed rain and snow.

Meteorology adviser Orhan Sen said weekend temperatures remain 5 to 6 degrees Celsius above average.

He expects:

  • Istanbul to fall from 21°C to about 16°C on Monday
  • Rain to begin early in the week
  • A gradual cooling trend continuing into next weekend

On Monday, showers are expected in sections of:

  • Marmara
  • The Aegean
  • The western Black Sea
  • Central Anatolia

On Tuesday, the system moves east toward:

  • The central Black Sea
  • Central Anatolia
  • The Eastern Mediterranean
  • The southeast

These areas include provinces such as Samsun, Sivas, Amasya, Adana, Hatay and Gaziantep.

Experts warn of strong winter between Dec. 20-Jan. 20

Climate scientist Okan Bozyurt told Sozcu that current indicators suggest one of the wettest winters in recent years. He noted that Türkiye has not experienced a strong winter since 2019.

His seasonal outlook expects:

  • Snowfall waves entering from the north
  • Peak activity between Dec. 20 and Jan. 20
  • Strong effects across Marmara, the Black Sea region and Central Anatolia

Bozyurt also highlighted the rapid start of the Eurasian snow cover and he expects nearly forty city centres to remain under snow in January.

These include major cities such as:

  • Istanbul
  • Bursa
  • Sakarya
  • Kocaeli
  • Trabzon
  • Samsun
  • Ankara
  • Eskisehir
  • Sivas

Many other northern and central provinces fall within the same projection.

Eastern provinces already face winter conditions

Erzurum and Ardahan report fog, freezing nights and icy roads. Visibility has dropped to 10 metres in some districts.

Residents have covered vehicles with blankets to protect them from frost, and light accidents occurred due to icy surfaces. Fog is likely to continue in the morning and evening hours.

Wind warnings issued for northwest of Türkiye

Meteorology reports strong winds across the western Marmara and northern Aegean coasts.

Forecasts expect:

  • Southern and southwesterly winds at 40 to 60 kilometers per hour
  • Short periods of stronger gusts in Thrace

Authorities advise caution due to possible travel disruptions.

Outlook

  • Warm conditions continue through the weekend
  • Rain begins Sunday night in Istanbul
  • A sharp temperature drop arrives Monday
  • Showers spread from west to east through midweek
  • Early signs point to a colder and more active winter pattern in December

Experts say the coming weeks will show whether the expected snowfall waves develop as forecast.
