Lake Van, Türkiye's biggest, has recently experienced noticeable environmental changes due to seasonal weather conditions. Heavy rainfall combined with the melting of winter snow in the surrounding mountains has significantly increased the water level and flow rate of the streams feeding into the lake.
One of these streams, which flows from the area near a hydroelectric power plant, has become much stronger than usual, carrying large amounts of mud and sediment as it rushes toward the lake.
As this fast-moving, sediment-rich freshwater enters Lake Van, it creates a striking visual contrast on the lake’s surface. The point where the stream meets the lake becomes clearly visible, as the muddy water spreads outward and forms a brownish layer over the typically blue and turquoise tones of the lake.
Lake Van itself is a large closed-basin lake with no natural outlet, which means all incoming water leaves only through evaporation. Because of its high mineral and salt content, the lake has a unique chemistry that makes it different from most freshwater lakes. These characteristics also contribute to its strong color variations when sediment-rich water enters.
Seen from above, especially in drone footage, the view becomes even clearer and visually striking. The movement of the stream into the lake can be followed as it gradually spreads outward, forming soft transitions between brown and blue tones. This creates a constantly shifting pattern on the water’s surface, shaped by wind, currents and seasonal inflow.
The lake also plays an important role in the region’s climate and local economy. Its large surface area influences nearby weather conditions, while surrounding towns benefit from fishing, agriculture, and tourism.
In addition, Lake Van is a popular destination for visitors due to its scenic views, volcanic mountains, and cultural landmarks such as Akdamar Island.
