Gaziantep’s signature dish, lahmacun, has been officially registered by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), the city’s mayor, Fatma Sahin, announced Wednesday, marking the fifth EU-recognized specialty from the southeastern hub.

EU label extends Gaziantep’s growing list

Officials said the new PGI status places lahmacun alongside earlier EU-recognized products from Gaziantep, including baklava, Araban garlic, menengic coffee, and Antep pistachio paste.

With this latest step, Gaziantep now counts 107 geographically indicated products overall, the highest figure among Turkish cities.

Why it matters for city’s food economy

Local authorities noted that the recognition safeguards a renowned culinary tradition while reinforcing Gaziantep’s brand in international markets.

“These registrations preserve the authenticity of our traditional flavors while showcasing our brand value on the global stage and adding economic value to our city,” Sahin said. She also thanked Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir, the Gaziantep Commodity Exchange, and others involved.
