Twin earthquakes rattle eastern Mediterranean near Crete

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday, according to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The quake occurred at 12:31 p.m. local time and was recorded at a depth of 9.32 kilometers (5.79 miles), AFAD said.

Meanwhile, the Kandilli Observatory reported that the earthquake occurred off the coast of Crete and measured a magnitude of 4.6.

Stronger tremor follows minutes later

Shortly after the initial quake, a second earthquake measuring magnitude 5.3 struck the same region at 12:37 p.m., according to AFAD.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
