A brush fire broke out Monday morning in Simi Valley, a city of approximately 125,000 residents located about 40 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, prompting evacuation orders for more than 28,600 people across multiple communities in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

The blaze, dubbed the Sandy Fire, ignited before 11 a.m. and spread rapidly through the area, driven by wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph on ridge tops.

By Monday evening, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) reported the fire had burned through 1,364 acres (552 hectares) with 0% containment.

At least one home and another structure were destroyed. No casualties have been reported.

Evacuation orders and shelter points

Mandatory evacuation orders covered a wide area of southern Simi Valley, while warnings extended into northern Thousand Oaks and county-line communities, including Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Chatsworth, West Hills and the Lake Manor neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Officials urged residents in affected areas to leave without delay, noting that those who need more time to evacuate should do so immediately.

A temporary evacuation point was established at Rancho Susana Community Park, and an evacuation shelter opened at Simi Valley High School.

Animal refuge locations included the Simi Valley Animal Shelter and the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

Seven schools within the Simi Valley Unified School District fell inside the evacuation zone. District Superintendent Hani Youssef announced all schools and campuses would remain closed on Tuesday for students and most staff.

"We will evaluate the status of the Sandy Fire tomorrow afternoon and communicate again with staff and families about Wednesday's status," Youssef said.

Firefighting resources deployed

Some 500 firefighters were battling the blaze as of Monday evening. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed that the Los Angeles Fire Department had deployed strike teams, dozers, a hand crew, and helicopters to support local crews.

"At this time, we do not expect the wildfire to reach the City of Los Angeles," Bass said.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said his department was also monitoring the fire's proximity to Westlake Village.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley was closed as a precaution but was not under evacuation orders as of Monday afternoon.

Residents across the San Fernando Valley were advised to expect smoke, with the city warning that air quality could be affected and urging those with respiratory conditions to remain indoors.

Second fire breaks out nearby

A separate fire ignited Monday in the Angeles National Forest near Burro Peak. The Burro Fire burned 30 acres at a moderate rate of speed and was 20% contained as of Monday night, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.

Evacuation warnings were issued for some nearby residents.

Weather outlook and federal support

Winds began to ease Monday night, with gusts dropping below 15 mph in the Simi Valley area, potentially aiding containment efforts.

However, meteorologists from the National Weather Service's Oxnard office warned of a new round of Santa Ana winds expected between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, which could drive further fire growth.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday evening that his office had secured a fire management assistance grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), enabling local, state and tribal agencies to apply for reimbursement of 75% of eligible fire suppression costs.
