Volunteers gathered at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, California, on Sept. 19 in an attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the largest beach cleanup ever held.
The event, organized by Deep Blue, KOOK, Opolis Optics, OoMee and Akasha Superfoods, ran from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lifeguard Tower 18 on Ocean Front Walk in Venice. Admission was free, and participants could register in advance or join on-site.
Organizers said they aimed to rally more than 2,000 volunteers to set the record. Community partners Love Button Global Movement and Next Fun Thing supported the effort alongside the five founding brands, each tied to ocean-related products, including skincare, recycled eyewear, natural-fiber clothing, marine botanical supplements and ocean-inspired beverages.
After the cleanup, organizers categorized and weighed the debris before sending it to recycling or disposal streams, with nonprofit 7Seas Collective managing the data collection. Results of the record attempt are expected within two weeks.
Deep Blue founder and chief executive Brooke Buckman said, "What's cool and what's good for the planet don't have to live in separate worlds."
Paige Ghafouria, operating director at Love Button, said: "There is something incredibly powerful about thousands of people coming together to care for a place we all share."
Organizers said the goal was to bring large numbers of people together for a single, large-scale cleanup effort focused on removing waste from the beach while raising awareness of environmental protection.
The initiative paired community participation with sustainability in one of Southern California's most recognized coastal areas.
