Thirty people were injured, four of them seriously, when a shuttle vehicle carrying police officers crashed into barriers on the Northern Marmara Motorway in Istanbul on Monday morning amid heavy rainfall, according to a statement from the Istanbul Governor’s Office.
The governor’s office later announced that a police officer who had initially been reported killed in the accident was revived after prolonged CPR at the hospital.
“The police officer who was announced to have been martyred in the traffic accident on the Northern Marmara Motorway was given prolonged CPR during the transfer to the hospital and at the hospital. In the final stage of the CPR, our police officer’s heart was restarted and our colleague was brought back to life,” the statement said.
“In the accident, 30 people were injured, four of them seriously. Treatment of the injured continues in the hospitals where they were taken,” it added.
Earlier statement reported one officer killed
In an earlier statement, the Istanbul Governor’s Office said that one police officer was killed and 16 others were injured when a shuttle vehicle carrying police officers crashed into barriers.
The accident occurred at the Basaksehir–Habipler connection point of the Northern Marmara Motorway at around 9 a.m. local time.
Authorities said the shuttle vehicle lost control and crashed into roadside barriers during heavy rain in Istanbul.
In a statement, officials said, “At around 09:00 on Monday, March 30, 2026, a shuttle vehicle carrying police officers crashed into barriers at the Basaksehir–Habipler connection point of the Northern Marmara Motorway,” and it added, “According to initial reports, one of our police officers was martyred, and 16 of our police officers, one of them seriously, were injured.”
The statement also said the injured police officers were transported to nearby hospitals and received medical treatment.
