Türkiye's customs enforcement teams seized six Pomeranian puppies at the Kapikule Customs Gate after authorities found that the animals were being brought into the country illegally, the Trade Ministry said.
The puppies, valued at ₺472,680 in total, were discovered during checks carried out by Customs Enforcement teams, the unit responsible for preventing smuggling and illegal trade at Türkiye's borders.
According to the ministry, the vehicle had arrived at the Kapikule Customs Gate to enter Türkiye when it was flagged as suspicious following risk analysis carried out by customs teams.
The vehicle was then sent for an X-ray scan, a security screening method often used at border crossings to check vehicles without opening every compartment.
After the scan showed a suspicious density inside the vehicle, teams from the Edirne Customs Enforcement Anti-Smuggling and Intelligence Directorate carried out a detailed search.
Six Pomeranian puppies were found during the inspection. The animals were allegedly being brought into Türkiye through illegal means.
Authorities seized the puppies after the discovery. The Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.
