A passenger bus caught fire after crashing into barriers in Türkiye's western Denizli province early Monday, killing eight, including a 9-month-old baby, and injuring 33 others.
The bus was traveling from the western city of Izmir to the Mediterranean resort city of Antalya when it struck roadside barriers on a motorway near Denizli. The impact triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle.
Emergency medical teams, firefighters, police officers, gendarmerie units and disaster response crews rushed to the scene after reports of the accident. Firefighters later brought the blaze under control.
The injured were taken to hospitals across Denizli for treatment. Officials said the bus was carrying 38 passengers and three crew members at the time of the crash.
Traffic toward Denizli was suspended for nearly four hours as emergency crews carried out recovery operations and removed the burned-out bus. The motorway later reopened.
Seventeen injured passengers have since been discharged from the hospital, while 16 remain under treatment. Three of them are in critical condition.
Some injured passengers told investigators that the bus had stopped about 30 minutes before the accident after the driver reported a problem with the air-conditioning system.
According to witness accounts, the driver inspected the vehicle before continuing the journey. The bus later changed lanes and struck the barriers before coming to a stop, after which a fire broke out.
Passengers told investigators the flames spread rapidly and intensified when the vehicle's windows shattered during the incident.
