A forest fire that broke out in the Kas district of Antalya on July 28 is being tackled from both the air and the ground, with firefighting efforts entering a second day.
The fire started in the forested area of the Uzumlu neighborhood for reasons yet to be determined. Following a tip-off, teams from the Antalya Forestry Regional Directorate and the fire department were dispatched to the area.
In the initial response, the fire was tackled with six helicopters, 3 planes, 14 fire trucks, 5 water supply vehicles, 2 first response vehicles, and 135 forestry workers. As the blaze spread due to wind, resources were increased to eight helicopters, three planes, 18 fire trucks, two construction machines, 5 water supply vehicles, 2 first response vehicles, and 135 forestry workers.
In a statement posted on its social media accounts, the General Directorate of Forestry said the fire's energy had been reduced, adding that efforts to bring it completely under control were continuing from the air and the ground.
As night fell, aerial support was suspended, and ground teams continued working to bring the fire under control. Officials said aerial firefighting efforts would resume the following morning.
Working through the night in an area of steep, sloping and rocky terrain, ground crews faced difficult conditions as they worked to contain the blaze. By the second day, resources on the ground had grown to 26 fire trucks, 9 water supply vehicles, 5 first response vehicles and 155 technical personnel and firefighters.
With the first light of dawn, helicopters and planes resumed providing aerial support to the ground operation. Teams are continuing their efforts to bring the fire under control from both the air and the ground.
