Basat Ozturk appointed as Türkiye's permanent representative to NATO

Basat Ozturk, director-general for international security at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, has been appointed as Türkiye’s permanent representative to NATO, according to a presidential decree on Thursday.

The decree, signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was published in the Official Gazette. Ozturk will represent Türkiye at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Ozturk was Türkiye's permanent representative to NATO between November 2018 and December 2022.

Who is Basat Ozturk?

Ambassador Ozturk was born in Elazig, Türkiye on Dec. 7, 1963. He graduated from the faculty of political science at Ankara University in 1985.

Ozturk had also served in several other posts since joining the Foreign Ministry in 1985, including as vice-consul in Chicago, Illinois, U.S. from 1991 to 1994; third secretary at the Turkish Embassy in Tehran, Iran between 1989 and 1991 and attache and third secretary at the NATO department of the Foreign Ministry from 1985 until 1989.

He served as the Turkish Consul General in Alexandria, Egypt, between 2002 and 2004.

He was appointed in October 2009 as Turkish ambassador to Kabul, Afghanistan, where he served until November 2013.

Between November 2018 and December 2022, he was Türkiye's permanent representative to NATO.
