Suspicious vehicle catches fire outside Turkish Parliament

A parliamentary commission established under the “terror-free Türkiye” initiative will convene at the Turkish Parliament. The session will hear testimonies from veterans and families of fallen soldiers.

Ahead of the meeting, a white 'Renault Toros' car was set on fire near the parliament building.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and the driver was taken into custody.

The Ankara Police Department later issued a statement, saying the suspect resides in Mersin, suffers from psychological disorders, and has a criminal record.

In Türkiye’s recent political history, the phrase “white Toros” represents more than just a car model.

White Renault 12 Toros vehicles became associated with unsolved murders and enforced disappearances in the 1990s in Türkiye's southeast provinces.

The fire on the same day as the terror-free Türkiye commission meeting led to conspiracy theories in Türkiye.

Beyoglu Mayor Inan Guney arrested in Istanbul corruption probe

A Turkish court ordered the arrest of Beyoglu mayor Inan Guney along with 16 other suspects. Twenty-seven others were released under judicial control measures after the detention.

Guney is known as a close associate of former Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

Guney is accused of involvement in multiple fraud schemes, including social media operations under the supervision of Imamoglu's media advisor and Istanbul municipality's media company, Murat Ongun.

The probe, which became public in March 2025 with the detention of then-mayor Imamoglu, has since expanded through several phases, revealing alleged irregularities primarily related to municipal tenders and misuse of authority within IBB's subsidiaries.

The accusations against Imamoglu include the questionable acquisition of three villas in one of Istanbul's prime locations by his family’s construction company, in which he owns 60% of the shares.

According to official documents, a close business associate of Imamoglu purchased the villas on his behalf and transferred the property to Imamoglu's company after three years at a cheap price.
