A British national named John Paul Goss, who is reportedly a professor of English literature, was found dead at his Turkish friend's house in Istanbul.

Turkish media described the death as suspicious after a spoon and a syringe were found near the body.

During the examination conducted at the residence, items believed to be related to drug use were seized, and an investigation into the incident was launched.

Forty-five-year-old Goss had been staying at his bartender friend’s home in Istanbul's Beyoglu district.

The incident occurred on Monday, Jan. 19, at around 12:45 p.m. in the Kalyoncu Kullugu neighborhood in Beyoglu.

According to his neighbors, Goss, who came to Türkiye approximately four years ago, had his mobile phone and passport stolen a short time ago. After becoming 'homeless,' Goss had been staying for about one month at the home of his friend Civan Necmi G, a bartender he met at an entertainment venue in Taksim.

Allegedly, on the night of the incident, Goss drank alcohol with his friend. Necmi G saw Goss lying motionless on the couch in the room where he was staying. He then notified the medical teams. The medical teams, who arrived at the scene, determined that Goss had died.

Goss’s body was later taken to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute morgue to determine the exact cause of death.

Police learned that Necmi G., who spoke to officers, said he works as a bartender at an entertainment venue and hosted Goss at his home for about a month after he became homeless.

He also claimed that Goss was addicted to substances and had recently had his phone and passport stolen.

Necmi G stated that on the night of the incident, they drank alcohol together, that he went to his room to sleep at around 2:00 a.m., and that on the same day at 12:30 p.m., he saw Goss lying on the couch.

A nearby shopkeeper said he had heard the man died from drug use and that he was found dead in a neighboring building.

He added that the man occasionally visited his grocery store and had been seen once or twice.
